When the Department of Child and Family Services attempts to interfere in the parent-child relationship, parents are in desperate need of vigorous advocacy by specially trained counsel. LADL attorneys are appointed to represent parents in crisis, helping families remain intact or regain custody of children the state has removed from their home. LADL attorneys lead interdisciplinary teams including paralegals, LADL social workers, investigators, parent partners, medical and other experts, and experienced supervisors, in preparing and presenting legal defenses in court every day. LADL execute our legal work with innovation, passion, and the highest ethical principles. LADL also expands our advocacy by engaging in the ongoing policy and legislative conversations regarding parents’ rights, at the county, state, and national levels.

Seeking:

LADL seeks energetic California certified paralegals who are committed to the fight for social justice, intellectually excited to assist in defending the constitutionally protected relationship between parents and their children, and sufficiently resilient to engage in daily battle against the generational effects of poverty, racism, addiction, domestic violence, and mental health conditions. Paralegal positions are available immediately, and LADL paralegals go through a multi-tiered training period to prepare them for the stimulating and electric atmosphere of the 25 courtrooms in Monterey Park and the 3 courtrooms in Lancaster. LADL attorneys have frequent client contact and litigate contested matters daily, protecting, and reunifying L.A. County’s most vulnerable families. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

· Perform duties and responsibilities as required of a Paralegal in the course of meeting Firm Director, supervisor, attorneys, court and client expectations and work production

· Assist attorneys in gathering documentation form clients and providers

· Write with clarity and intent to attorneys, staff, clients, and court

· Provide legal research, writing, and legal analysis

· Draft Custody Orders, Restraining Orders, and 388 Petitions for modification, change or set-aside of prior orders given changed circumstances or new evidence.

· Perform client Interviews and draft client declarations

· Create, clear, organized work documentation including attachments and exhibits

· Draft Motions and Declarations

· Initiate Hearing Paperwork

· Conduct Trial Preparation and Witness Preparation

· Set up Court Calls with Clients

· Develop Parentage Briefing

· Perform Video Transcription

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Paralegal certificate or degree from an ABA approved program or training/experience as an intern/volunteer performing juvenile dependency casework.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

Physical Activities include but are not limited to: on a continuous basis, sit at a desk, intermittently twist and reach office equipment; write or use keyboard to communicate through written means; lifted up to 15 pounds, repetitive motion and typing when using computer keyboard, speaking to clients on the telephone.
